Youth Cancer Trust NHS

Community Guidelines

Realshare is a social networking website for teenagers and young adults living with cancer. To register with Realshare South West, you need to be a young person with cancer diagnosed and treated at the age of 16 and/or up to your 25th birthday, within the South West.

When you register, your patient number will be verified with your hospital.  You will then be emailed a username and password.  You may change these on your profile page when you log on. Your username is how other Realshare members will identify you. To avoid confusion, please don’t use terms that reflect figures of authority or formal roles such as nurse, doctor, etc.

For your protection, we ask that you don’t include your full name, an email or website address, telephone or fax number in your username, or any other information which could be used to identify you in the ‘real world’. Once registered, all your forum posts, images, media are invisible to the general public for your protection and to allow you privacy for real conversation.

To keep Realshare an inclusive and safe place for friendly, active and supportive discussion, we ask that our users follow these simple guidelines.

The Realshare moderators have the right to remove any post which is thought to be inappropriate.  If a post is removed, the user will be contacted and given the reasons why.

If you report a post, it will be dealt with by the Realshare Moderation team within 24 hours. The website will be moderated during working hours and over the weekend.

Show respect to your new friends

Making good friends online is all about respecting one another. When talking to people online, you should never say anything that you wouldn’t say face to face. Before you post anything, think about how your comment could be interpreted. If you feel yourself getting angry or upset, it’s always a good idea to take a break before you respond. Go and do something else for a while and then come back and think about how to word your reply.

Be supportive to each other

Realshare offers a space for young people who have been affected by cancer, so always be sympathetic to other members’ feelings. Please do not bully, harass or intimidate any user. We don't tolerate racism, sexism, homophobia, ageism or other forms of hate-speech or content that could be interpreted as such. And, of course, offensive or abusive language is unacceptable. If somebody is trying to stir up trouble, the worst thing you can do is respond. Ignore troublemakers and they will leave you alone.  If they don’t and you feel upset by them please notify the realshare moderators. Realshare reserves the right to take steps that we think will benefit the whole community which could include suspending an account without notice or banning them from using Realshare.

DON’T SHOUT AT THEM!

Typing in capital letters is considered SHOUTING, and is generally frowned upon. If you want to emphasise part of your post, use italics or *asterisks*.

Is that funny?

Humour can be a great thing, but sarcasm and obscure references can be difficult to understand. Similarly, in-jokes that only mean something to a handful of your close friends can make the site seem cliquey and put people off. Smileys and acronyms can help you let people know what you really mean.

Be nice to newbies!

We were all new on Realshare once. Be patient and helpful to new members. You might make a really nice friend!

Say hello and goodbye in chat

When you enter chat, it’s a nice idea to greet everyone in the room. And when new people enter, make them feel welcome by dropping in a quick hello.

It’s good to be sociable

We encourage lively discussion and welcome your opinions on the matters that affect you. But you should encourage other people’s' views too as this makes it a more useful or enjoyable conversation.

Got something new?

If you have any ideas for new topics of discussion, email the moderators. We would love to hear from you!

No spam thanks!

So that the site doesn’t get bogged down or crash, we ask you not to post links on the site. Thanks!

Chatting about alternative or complementary therapies

Because of the nature of the site, a lot of the chat will be about treatments. Because they may not suit everybody, we ask that you only discuss alternative therapies as used alongside people’s ongoing conventional treatments. You can say how they may have helped you alongside your own conventional treatment, for example, but NOT advise people to ignore their own treatment or doctor’s advice.

If you are worried about someone

All mentions of self-harm or suicide will be removed from the site, so if you are worried about another member of the Community, please contact a member of the admin team immediately. It is not your responsibility to offer counselling, so refer the member to the realshare moderators or The Samaritans on 08457 90 90 90. We take these messages very seriously and will offer members guidance to appropriate support and advice.

. . . and finally the legal stuff

Posting content that may put you or us at risk of prosecution, such as defamatory posts or content that breach someone else’s intellectual property rights is against our house rules. Please do not 'name and shame' individuals or organisations as this can leave both you and Realshare open to prosecution if your comments could be interpreted as libellous. Please do not use our Community for anything unlawful, misleading or malicious.

Imitating other users can be a form of harassment and we take this very seriously. We may remove any content, delete accounts and ban users who do this. Members who are suspected of impersonating another member will have their accounts suspended pending investigation. Please do not provide false information in your biography or create an account for anyone other than yourself without permission.

Views expressed in this community are purely the views of the members and as such don't constitute professional recommendations or advice or the opinions of Realshare and the NHS South West.

We have the right to update and change our Community guidelines and Terms and Conditions at any time. If you have any questions about these rules, or anything on the site at all, contact us and we’ll do all we can to help.
